The castle's turrets rise directly from the shoreline, stone balustrades meeting the water with no buffer between architecture and river. George Boldt commissioned the 120-room complex in 1900 as a tribute to his wife Louise, intending it as a summer retreat that would rival the grand estates of Europe. Construction halted abruptly in 1904 after Louise's sudden death, and the unfinished castle stood abandoned for seventy-three years before the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority began restoration work. Visitors arriving at the Heart Island dock find themselves at the base of a six-story structure whose granite facade and red-tile roofs were modeled after Rhineland castles. The main building holds the grand hall, formal dining rooms, and the billiard room with its carved oak paneling. A separate power house, once the most advanced in the region, supplied electricity and steam heat to the entire island complex. The Alster Tower, a smaller structure on the island's western point, was designed as a playhouse and later served as a reading room. The castle operates as a self-guided experience. Most visitors spend between two and three hours walking the grounds and interior rooms. The third and fourth floors, once private family quarters, were never completed; exposed beams and raw masonry in these spaces show how construction stopped mid-work. The yacht house, a quarter-mile from the main castle, contains a collection of antique wooden boats and a two-story recreation hall. Boldt Castle New York draws over two hundred thousand visitors each year, most arriving between late May and early October when ferry service runs on a continuous loop from Alexandria Bay. Ferry tickets and castle admission are sold separately. The ferry schedule determines access windows—boats depart Alexandria Bay every twenty minutes during peak hours, and the final departure back to the mainland leaves shortly after the castle closes. Weather on the river can shift quickly in shoulder seasons, and service may suspend during high wind or thunderstorms.
