Rain pooled in the unroofed powerhouse. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and opened the castle to visitors, funding restoration through a per-person conservation fee that remains the sole price of entry today.
Boldt Castle tours draw more than two hundred thousand visitors each season, most arriving by cruise from Alexandria Bay or Ivy Lea. The main castle spans five acres of sculpted gardens, stone archways, and a circular dovecote modeled after a medieval tower Boldt saw in the Rhine Valley. The castle's architecture borrows heavily from European estates Boldt studied during transatlantic crossings as proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria. Craftsmen imported limestone from Indiana, oak from the Adirondacks, and ironwork from Philadelphia foundries. The Italian Garden terraces descend to the water in three tiers, framed by wrought balustrades and columned pergolas. Restoration work continues room by room, guided by original blueprints and photographs archived at Cornell University. Volunteers repaint crown molding, reset parquet floors, and stabilize the clock tower's copper roof.
Heart Island sits three miles upstream from the Thousand Islands International Bridge, accessible only by boat. Most Boldt Castle tours include round-trip passage from the American or Canadian shore, with departures running every thirty minutes during peak months. The island opens at half-past ten and closes at half-past six, though the last ferry boards ninety minutes before that final gate time. The conservation fee applies to all guests aged five and older; cruise fares vary by departure point and optional add-ons such as the helicopter flight or two-castle route that continues to Singer Castle on Dark Island.
